George lived his entire life in Harrells, NC where he grew up and was a respected member of the community. The beginning of WWII caused George to abandon his education at UNC Chapel Hill, when he came home and went to work at the NC Shipbuilding Company, in Wilmington, NC and helped the war effort by assisting in the construction of Liberty Ships. He was later drafted and served in the Navy until the end of the war. George was very active in the enrichment of the Harrells community. He was part of the committee that was instrumental in bringing local telephone service to Harrells and was a charter member of the Harrells Volunteer Fire Department. He spent most of his career in the grocery business that carried him all over the state, where he made friends and was admired by his customers.
George took an active role as a member of the Black River Presbyterian Church, in Ivanhoe, NC and later, the Wallace Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher.
George had a love for local history, and was a fountain of information. In his later years, he was sought out for his knowledge and recognition of local events and history. Anyone who took the time to chat with George left having learned something they didn’t know before. A valuable resource will be missed.
