Sara Elizabeth Carton Mitchener (Sally) was born on February 23, 1925 in Coshocton, Ohio and died peacefully at her home on February 25, 2017.  She was the daughter of James Victor Carton and Mary Harriet Stevenson Carton.  Her parents and only sibling, Victor Stevenson Carton, preceded her in death.  Sally was also predeceased by her husband, Dr. James Samuel Mitchener, Jr., and by her sons, Albert Stevenson Mitchener, Paul Williams Mitchener and an infant, James, her daughter-in-law, Cary Kendall Mitchener and son-in-law, The Honorable David Watson Daniel.

Sally attended Ohio Wesleyan University where she studied music as a piano major and graduated in 1946 from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland.  She worked as a head nurse in surgery on Halstead 2 South at Hopkins and did PRN nursing at Duke Hospital where Dr. Mitchener completed some of his surgical training.  Her passions were music, tennis, golf, bridge and numerous hobbies shared with her loving, caring and devoted family and friends.

Sally is survived by six children and their families:  Dr. James Samuel Mitchener III and his son, James Samuel Mitchener IV (Roanoke, VA); Victor Carton Mitchener and his wife, Rebecca Robbins Mitchener (Charlotte, NC) and their children, Roland Mitchener Simmons and her husband Michael, Anne Stuart Mitchener, John McDowell Moore, Sarah Katherine Moore, William Robbins Moore and his wife Maddie; Sally Hardison Mitchener and her sons James Stevenson Mitchener and McNair Hardison Mitchener (Charlotte, NC); William Thomas Mitchener and his wife Victoria Collett Mitchener (Charlotte, NC) and their daughters Ruffin Collett Mitchener, Victoria Larson Mitchener and Mary Carton Mitchener; Elizabeth Mitchener Daniel and her sons Robert Harris Daniel II and David Mitchener Daniel (Wilson, NC); Dr. John Edward Mitchener and his wife The Reverend Julia Boyd Mitchener and their children William Sanders Mitchener and Margaret Stevenson Mitchener (Macon, GA); Harriet Mitchener Gray and her husband Lee Roberson Gray and their sons William Henry Gray II and James Mitchener Gray (Greenville, SC).  She lived a full and happy life and loved her children and grandchildren above all else.  She was extremely proud of all of them.  Her family was truly her greatest joy.  Sally was a long-time member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Laurinburg, North Carolina.  The family extends great appreciation for the nurturing care from many devoted friends and caregivers.

A graveside burial service celebrating Sally’s life will be held at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery, Laurinburg, North Carolina on Thursday, March 2, 2017, at 11 am.  The family will greet friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
